Himalaya 14_27.12.2008 (Yak Kharka-Thorung Phedi)

Sâmbătă, 27 decembrie 2008,
Himalaya, Nepal, Circuitul Annapurna
Yak Kharka (4.110 m alt.) – Thorong Phedi (4.450 m alt.)
So, here am I, 24 hours before my highest trekking point and about 1.300 m below of Thorung La. At 8 a.m.  already equiped and waited in the cold, dark dinning room. I still looked disfigured and my face turned into something diabolical. It was already the third day and missing a mirror I took pictures of myself in order to see how it looks. I couldn't recognize myself yet, even the forehead was swollen and fat, I had a double chin, I looked like a sort of monster.
I left the beautiful location at 09:15 a.m., saying good bye from the white, muscular horse whom I had met the previos day as a sort of saying me "welcome". Due to advancing in altitude I begant to feel the weight of my backpack as a real burden, more than before.
Although a short distance today, I fully enjoyed again about the variety around me: a narrow path, alpine pastures, the first yaks flock somewhere far away on a slope above 4.200 m altitude, landslides, a new very solid and very long steel bridge connecting the same dramatic ground ruptures. The landscape was similar to that from yesterday: the same colors, same gravity of the spectacular - I just try to look for suitable words and phrases for describing, but it's becoming more and more difficult, I feel the risk of infinitely repeating a fascination I hardly express.
After about one hour and a quarter we entered into Letdar (4250 m alt.) , the penultimate stop before Thorung La Pass.  We passed "Snowland Hotel & Restaurant" and here was the first time when I noticed how the roof was built: over the original wood roof they put a compact layer of stones and boulders, and on top of them another untreated wooden planks or thin slabs of stone, like those that were inscriptioned or painted with tibetan mantras. Fantastic manual labor to build such a building, it is impressive to see this at over 4,000 meters, without an infrastructure and other resources you normaly need for carrying the materials, assembling them, to break, process, mount, polish, paint, arrange and everything else it demands such a labour. It is impressive to observe the careful design in order to look nice and clean and welcoming – all these without modern technology or sophisticated equipment. Therefore I find it impressive and, after a deeper analysis, the European civilization should return to certain values arising from such of small details and aspects. But let’s do not deviate from the story of this adventure way. Another exampe: It was a covered terrace, simple, with glass walls – God, how did they manage to carry so big one-piese-windows up to there?! -, it certainly served exclusively as dinning place for the guests. All around that terrace – I’d say a rectangle about 9 x m meters – every each window had share curtains, but each for a different color: red, green, dark green and dark blue. The woody building outside was painted white. And furthermore, from one end of the terrace roof to the hotel building was starting a long series of Tibetan prayer flags, those multicolor flags we meet everywhere in Himalaya. Such a colours harmony for eyes and soul, indeed!
We left the last building named “Chur Lattar Hotel & Restaurant” on our right side and followed the dry, narrow and sunny path which meandered across the slope. Up there was an alpine meadow covered by sunburnt grrass and whacked by strong winds. On a distant hillside I saw the first flock of yaks, the first specimens of this magnificent animal, which helps the local population to live and survive in high Himalaya. Everything it comes from a yak is used by the humans.

Thubten Jigme Norbu, the elder brother of Tenzing Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, reports on his journey from Kumbum in Amdo to Lhasa in 1950 that:
Before long I was to see the vast herds of drongs with my own eyes. The sight of those beautiful and powerful beasts who from time immemorial have made their home on Tibet's high and barren plateaux never ceased to fascinate me. Somehow these shy creatures manage to sustain themselves on the stunted grass roots which is all that nature provides in those parts. And what a wonderful sight it is to see a great herd of them plunging head down in a wild gallop across the steppes. The earth shakes under their heels and a vast cloud of dust marks their passage. At nights they will protect themselves from the cold by huddling up together, with the calves in the centre. They will stand like this in a snow-storm, pressed so close together that the condensation from their breath rises into the air like a column of steam. The nomads have occasionally tried to bring up young drongs as domestic animals, but they have never entirely succeeded. Somehow once they live together with human beings they seem to lose their astonishing strength and powers of endurance; and they are no use at all as pack animals, because their backs immediately get sore. Their immemorial relationship with humans has therefore remained that of game and hunter, for their flesh is very tasty.

We hiked on a very narrow path crossing dramatically steep slopes. As we met a large place covered by ice coming apparently from a higher hidden river, to that degree of inclination seemed to be a turning point on our way. To get around on the bottom was impossible because there the ground collapsed and it was much to risky. It was like a pit filled with ice, but very steep. Higher on the ground it was also impossible to try, the slope was covered by dust, sand, ice extending upwards, it was probably a water leak there, otherwise I couldn’t explain the presence of that suddenly icy area, so thick and lumpy. Of course that falling down wouldn’t meant death, but impossible to escape serious injuries and to come back uphill having that sort of backpack. Somehow I managed to pass over. No way to get back from the trekk on the same route! Our path lead further down anyway, winding and steep, I descended very carefully, I crossed the river bed on a small wooden bridge and I climbed all again, with greater care. The last thing you could wish there, in that carg area, were to slip down.

After two hours from our start on today’s route we met a rock shelter with a stonce fence located on a regular ground palm, having in front of it a wooden table and a bench. On the bank lay in the sun, wearing thick, a Nepalese man. The place was somewhere around 4.300 alt. and in that place you were expected to serve a cup of hot tea or soup. That instant Chinese soup which is preparing in hot water. I looked inside the tiny “farm” where the Nepalese man lived with his wife and I was so impressed how these people are living for months, just waiting for the first snow. After the first snow fall they retreat to the low altitude, because the pass is blocked and no tourists are coming or crossing anymore, so they cannot make any income during the winter.

I asked for a nuddle soup for 300 rupies. I was furthermore amazed and  impressed getting the soup  served in a porcelain cup, a specific Chinese cheap but fine porcelain! And a assorted dish, of course.
Some words about the place those people lived. I looked inside, but not too insistent, as I felt a little bit embarrassed to go into people’s room. I didn’t took pictures because of missing charged batteries, but I saw the general aspect. The small building from stones had about 3 x 1,5 m, on the left side they had a tepid sleeping place and the only furniture was a wooden rack, about 2 m high, on which were arranged some metal dishes like a large kettle, a few pots, some large empty boxes, all sorts jars with things necessary to prepare tea, big thermos for 2 liters.

On the alpine meadow behind the shelter grazed a huge, deep black yak with a glossy loner. A lonely specimen, what is not usual for yaks. Finally I had the chance to be very close to one of this legendary animals and I prayed in my mind he would dare closer to me. The “ancient biest” truly came down looking for better grazing flocks and reached the path I was standing on, but hanging afraid. As I was ready to arrange my camera for shooting a selfmade picture with me on it near the yak I did a suddenly movement with my leg on the steep path, so the beautiful biest was terrible surprized and ran away in a very scared manner. I was amazed about it unexpected rapidity. I felt guilty about the incident and was so sorry about its fear, but I couldn’t fix the error. He ran away on the wide curved path and I suspected that we will meet him again somewhere further on the way. The area where we were at that moment was dangerous, I couldn’t afford to sudden gestures, the trail lost in the abyss, on the other side rose majestically another slope, a dramatic scenery really. That type of area where you don’t wish to be caught by the night or bad weather, because there’s no place to escape or find a refuge, there’s nowhere to stop, everything is under the sign of landslides and even eagles have almost no chances to reach your inert body!

Still about half an hour to walk for reaching Thorung Phedi and it was like “walking on the tips”. We met indeed the wild yak who was scared again and practically ran up on the slope with a fantastic balancing. In fact it was his territory and probably knew each cluster and each stone. We were the intruders.

The entry into Thorung Phedi at 4.420 m high is a spectacular one. It is a show really or a scene from the show that you could call simple, “Himalaya”.

The path you just walk on and which lead you to the entry of this last bastion of the Manang district comes from below, rising slowly the the shelters built there with an impressive “architectural” skill. That steep terrain that you’ve gone so far til here suddenly opens in front of you and parallel of your path other different two more paths are appearing somehow. In front of you the entire picture is blocked by two giants of granite, gorgeous, wonderful appearance before your eyes and soul. Only going closer to them the landscape will reveal what is really happening, if they are only one body or if they are splited, separated from other territory. I try to describe the specific multidimensiional mountains images which we normally saw from the distance but we do not know whether the various layers of roch are of the same entity or totally separate entities.
I am usually fascinated about colors and sizes, they are actually the permant call on the route, it’s a mistery.
The first tourism board welcomes you with the same omni-present “Wel-come” and belonged to the “Hotel&Thorong High Camp Mountain View Hotel”. Due to the mentioned information on it this was opened all the year around, 12 months per year. In Nepal it becomes very important to know or to fast learn “the signs”, how to read “between the lines and rows”. As tourist you have to adapt these messages to the local reality, to understand that they are not blatantly malicious, but they doesn’t correspond to the actual offer that they are promoting. Local people may not know the implications of advertising they do, but they know for sure that this kind of advertising attracts customers, the rest they do not care about. To a different level – if I dare to affirm hereby -, a much more studied and awared, so much more draconian and destructive is also the advertising of the civilized world of the big European metropols which we know nowadays.

Going for another 200 meters you get into the actual assembly of the improvised shelters and on the right side you see another tourist board, a large one, clean, warning the English speakers about the altitude sickness. A huge title, bold yellow letters: “ACUTE MOUNTAIN Sickness!!!”. If you are first time on higher altitude, better pay attention and take care, stay one day longer on the spot and when you feel acclimatised go further.

I got a large room with two large and high beds, having those colored and very heavy and warm blankets. There was no electricity, the toilet was outside somewhere, it is severely cold up there and the landscape is beyond any imagination!
We gathered about six tourists here from all over the world. We all where agree to leave together in the morning at five o’clock, immediately after a breakfast served by candlelight.
From my diary: “I only wish I could sleep, I struggle for last three nights. In the room are minus ten degrees, so I put again all those things in my warm sleeping bag – water, batteries, camera etc. – and ….wishing me a nice sleep!”

  2. This design is wicked! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool! My website;
