ISTANBUL - airports transfer

I simply have to write about this now, - 07.01.2011 -  after I experienced – unfortunately – 2 different ways of making the transfer between the two airports in Istanbul: Sabiha and Ataturk. It can be so difficult, and it can be so simple, even if you do not have money for a taxi, which could charge you with at least 70 EUR.
So, before starting my trip to Kathmandu, having a backpack of 21 kg, a separately sleeping bag of 2,5 kg and a smaller backpack for 7 kg, of course I tried to find out information about how I reach the Sabiha Airport, as I landed on Ataturk Airport. And I was really amazed to find out, that the transfer between the both airports can take over 3 hours. I signed in into my account on virtualtourists and I opened a new discussion issue asking this particularly question. I’ve got some comments, some advices, some information. So I had to be prepared with a difficult journey. The flight from Bucharest to Istanbul takes no longer than one hour, but the transfer inside involves 4 different transportation public vehicles and takes at least 3 hours.
So, let’s start to describe the first adventure in Istanbul:

When you exit the Ataturk Airport, go right side and at the end of the way you go down to the subway. Of course that first I tried to find out how much could cost a taxi and somebody from the information desk, a woman who didn’t speak English at all, or maybe 10 words, said something about 70 Turkish Lira, but you could be sure she has no idea. 1 eur is about 2 TL. So, anyhow, I changed 30 EUR. Here I was also surprised to see that neither the guy spoke English at all and he was in bad mood somehow, he was during his dreaming-with-open-eyes-on-the-employe’s-time&money session, I suppose. So, bad impression at the first sight. These were the first representatives of the Turkish Nation in their country. Bad impression.
So, you go to the subway and you have to pay 1,75 TL to a machine, getting in change a sort of plastic coin, which you have to put in a different machine. Afterwards you may to enter. The stupid thing is that the price is the same for all public transportation, but I did not find out about existing a sort of day card or something like that, so that you could pay only once for the entire day. So you have to look after your money and to pay every single time. Of course this was not so simple for a tourist carrying heavy luggage, like me, this is why I mention all these crazy details. The most disturbing thing it was, for sure, the fact that I came here being sure the Turkish people are speaking English. To meet airport stuff who has no idea of English seem to be something I cannot understand in Europe and I have to say that I do have no tolerance for this, especially that Turkey is a touristic country, no doubts.
As you do not know the prices and the mechanisms, I had to find out every single time how much it costs, where and how should I pay. This is why my transfer took 3 hours instead of probably two and half, maybe. One machine didn’t want to get a banknote of 20, only of 10 TL.
I missed the first subway train because I simply did not realized it is ready to go and there is only one direction for all trains, so I waited for the second.
I’ve got off from the subway tray on the 6th stop called Zeytinburnu. It is an outside station. As you leave the subway station, immediately you see the tram station. In the subway train it was a colourful schema of all public transportation routes so I knew from there I have to take tram no. T1 to the station named Eminonu. The same payment system, same price.
18 stations by tram, about one hour.
You leave your tram to Eminonu and here you have to find out which ship you have to take for crossing the Bosphorus, to cross over on the Asian side. Big chaos here. The ships are navigating in different directions, it is a little bit crazy, when you are for the first time here and do not speak/understand Turkish at all. Somehow I find out the right gate to the right ship – name of destination was Kadikoy -,  but here I had another problem: there were two different kinds of machines here and the guy who was responsible about taking care did not speak any English. Finally I solved the problem and I could buy my small plastic coin using a banknote of 20. But this coin here was different, not anymore a colourful plastic coin, but a very small metal coin which you cannot identify too fast among the coins you get as change from your banknote, so firstly I thought I paid, but I’ve got no enter coin. Luckily me I was seen from a Turkish man who understood my surprise and asking face and showed on my own hand the small “wonder coin”, my entrance ticket for the ship. So, I got the 3rd public transportation to my destination, Sabiha Airport. I didn’t paid attention, but the crossing took about 20 minutes I think.

I reached Kadikoy, another big chaos. I knew I have to look for an express bus E10, which drove directly to the Sabiha Gokcen Airport. But there were so many busses there, so many bus stations ...... After I walked some minutes through the crowd I asked somebody and luckily he showed me the station 3 meters away from me. Aftter 10 minutes, in respect with the schedule, the bus came. Clean bus, big, enough place for luggage. Here you have to pay to the driver and it costs 3,50 TL. The bus has several stops on the way to the airport and after 80 minutes we reached my destination. I wanted to know from the driver if they drive during the night too, as to my returning from Kathmandu I land in Istanbul, on Sabiha Airport, at midnight. But the driver had no idea what I want from him, he couldn’t and didn’t want to understand any English.
So, you reached the Asian airport and you have to pay 2 TL or 1 EUR for a luggage cart. But you have internet for free anywhere. In Ataturk Airport you do not pay for the luggage cart, but you have to pay for internet.

So, now, coming back is a totally different story and I am just sitting in Ataturk Airport now and I cannot, I just cannot understand why it was necessary to pay so much time, effort and tribute for such a long transfer one month ago, when there is, oh yes (!) there is a much more simple, efficient and nicer solution: instead of 8,75 TL you pay 23 TL, you have to take only 2 buses and it takes 2 hours. Why so simple, when much more complicate is also possible? I will never understand why nobody, but nobody on virtualtourist didn’t give me this information one month ago, as I needed it, but it gave it to me now.

So, from Sabiha Airport you just go outside and take a HAVAS bus to TAKSIM. 13 TL, one hour, modern, clean bus. From the same place in TAKSIM, you take a different HAVAS bus, to Ataturk Airport. 10 TL, one hour, clean, modern. THIS IS ALL, people!!

Is this not a crazy story about inter-human communication?

I was so worried that I have to repeat the long story of the transfer, having a backpack of 23 kg, a smaller backpack for about 10 kg full of books I bought in Kathmandu, my photo camera, notebook and sleeping bag!! I was so absolutely happy that the guy from virtualtourist finally gave me this information, but so nervous and frustrated because he did not tell me about it one month ago ..... he couldn’t explain why he did not do it then. Just not thinking about it?

So, this is why I took my time and I tried my best English for writing this entire story. Unfortunately I switched the airports and on Ataturk I have no internet, so the publishing have to wait some hours longer.
I wish everybody who is doing Istanbul airports transfer the best luck, if any question, please ask me. You can find information in internet by looking after HAVAS SHUTTLE BUS too and the information there are available and the transfer can be so easy and enjoyable, really, even if you have much luggage. Both shuttle bus drivers helped out with the luggage, I was amazed. The only unpleasant thing for me it was here, when he drop us out at the international airport, there were no luggage carts and I had to struggle it for 10 minutes alone until I found the entrance in the airport and a cart. I had to introduce a coin of 1 TL, which I can get back if I bring the cart back, it is the supermarket system. A lot of Turkish men, none of them thought to help me out, even I suppose I looked really silly struggling me alone with the 4 pieces, one very black and heavy.

Good luck everybody, myself I did not enjoy this kind of experience in Istanbul and I did not feel relaxed here, as single woman. But this will not stop me .... I am a traveler through the life and write about this :-)

New Year in Kathmandu/Thamel

Friday, December 31st, Kathmandu/Thamel, 08,30 a.m.

I finnaly succeded to sleep well, after 2 weeks of insomnia. To sleep again in a warm bed .... OK, even if I am tipping since half an hour and the fingers are frozen and I have my hut on the head .... I call this a warm atmosphere, really!!
So, the password for internet connection was wrong, this is why I couldn't connect yesterday at all, the guys just forgot to tell me I have to write the both words in a single one.
Let's see what kind of last day of the year I have. All I know is that I want sun, warm, a quiet place where I can write my post cards. I have to recalculate my rest of money and I hope not to change again. Strange, but yesterday I did not eat, now I am not at all hungry ....
Wow, I still do not realize that I ended my mountaineering adventure in a good way and that I am somehow back, in a more comfortable world ....
11:00 p.m., in my room

It was actually a good day of doing nothing. I couldn’t feel like having breakfast, so I ordered just a small pot of coffee (80 NRP) and I drank it in about 4 hours, as I was connected to the internet, I checked my e-mails, I wrote almost all my post cards I intend to send. I was sitting in the hotel garden, in the sun, I spoke with a young Dutch lady who wanted to join me at the sunny table, writing her diary. Then Kedar appeared, I think it was about 1 p.m. Very happy, he has 6 inquiries, maybe one will become concrete. We spoke about our business, plans, ideas and he left. We meet again on Sunday, he said the visit cards will be ready til I leave Nepal. I left the hotel garden too about 2 p.m., I went downtown. I entered Pilgrims Library and I choose quite fast 3 books: “Hero of Everest – Tenzing – a biography of Tenzing Norgay” by Ed Douglas (950 NRP), “Everest – the mountaineering history –“3rd edition, by Walt Unsworth (2.800 NRP – about 800 pages), “Touching my father’s soul – in the footsteps of Tenzing Norgay” by Tenzing Norgay and Broughton Coburn (680 NRP). I was just admired the big library, as I wanted to go to the toilet and I walked back to the entrance, to ask about the toilet. Then I saw an old book …… “View from the summit” by Sir Edmund Hillary, published 1999 (1.856 NRP). I took the book, looking at it in a sort of holy feeling, it seemed difficult to believe I hold in my hands a book written by that man who had the biggest impact of Nepal ever – see Khunde, see Khumjung villages - …… I took the book in my hands and I’ve just forgot about the toilet, I rose my head and I saw Andi. I said “hellooo”and Claire appears from another corner, so we had a very nice re-meeting. I asked about the plans for tonight, they started to think where would be nice to have dinner, then they said it would be good to go there for a check, so I looked again to my book, I decided is it an original and I have to buy it. So I gave all my left money, over 6.000 NRP on these 4 books, I’ve got a present from the side of the library and we went to check the location, maybe to make a table reservation.
Yes, a special place inside Thamel, European fine gastronomy, even Swiss-like cookies …. I booked for 8,30 p.m. and then we went to their Kathmandu Guest House and were sitting in the inner garden, on the grass, looking to my books and talking for a while. Very pleasant, like in paradise. The guest house is hosted by an very old castle and it is amazing in a way, you forgot about crazy Thamel and the entire misery. I left them at 5 p.m. and we agreed I pick up them at 7, we have a beer in the lobby and then we go for our dinner. I came in my hotel room, I downloaded some pictures on FB, I noted my costs, I left the hotel 6,50, I met Rick on the floor, we talk about what we did on our trek, then I went to change 100 EUR (93.350 NRP) and at 7 p.m. I has in Kathmandu Guest House. Very nice and mystical arrangement for New Year, a lot of candles, wonderful. I spend one and half hour drinking a beer and talking about various things. It was some rain outside (!!) and Andi went out to see how it is. In the hotel garden it was Anna, alone and lonely, having dinner. They changed some words and Andi said it was a strange meeting. I did not ask anything at all, I just felt a little bit strange about the situation.
Our dinner was special indeed, they chose pizza and myself a chicken schnitzel. Very European, very well prepaired, but such a few vegetables, I was very disappointed about the size of my portion (400 NRP). A Gorka bier (300 NRP) and a brownie cookie with ice cream (225 NRP). For my small stomach it was more than enough, I drank only one glass of beer.
So, they accompanied me to my hotel. Crazy stuff on the streets of Thamel, a lot of music, food, drogs, police with sticks, girls, some tourists, a lot of bikers, rain ….. I am really amazed about the atmosphere, it is half past eleven and near my hotel is a huge party, music, very laud music, a lot of people dancing ….. I feel in a special way, to be very honest.
Tomorrow about 11 I go to pick up Claire & Andi for an Indian Breakfast somewhere, they know a place.
I am cold, it is too cold inside. I suppose the party near by will be till in the morning. Interesting music actually, I cannot describe it, a combination of rhythmic Indian music, some incantation tendency, some disco, absolutely crazy rhythm there inside. Real discotec music, I like it, give me the feeling of times 10 years ago, as I used to go dancing in such of crazy places.
I am happy about the books, I think its are great books and now after I walked on the same paths as Sir Hillary I feel something ….. difficult to be described, really.

Himalaya reloaded 2011-17th day-back to Lukla

17th day of trek, 29th of December 2010
Namche Bazaar (3.440 m ) – Lukla (2.800 m)
8 hours
Another momentous day. It was the last trekking day for this session. I enjoyed a marvelous night and I rediscovered the pleasure of a hotel sheet: white , thick, ironed cotton, smelling as fresh washed. Very quiet. A perfect silence. A very pleasant room temperature. On the first floor, where I was staying, no man was there. I went out to the toilet only twice, but in the building is almost a constant temperature everywhere, I didn't feel anymore that painfully raw and sudden contrast, which weakens you every time.
I've insisted so much in this story about describing the intensity of the cold, that I certainly scared everybody. But it was only because of my caught cold that got worse forwarding in altitude. So, the cold air became the most radical and negative component of my senses throughout the nights. I felt shackled in a physical space of a palpable cold, what can I say more? But it is for sure something that it will be forgotten in the advantage of the real adventure and all those  diurnal components which made me breathe the happiness.

To walk down the distance from Namche Bazaar to Lukla in a single day is something debatable. If I would have spent an additional day and night in Namche and then would have left in the early morning at 7:30 – 8:00, for sure everything would have been just perfect. But so, it was crazy. After such a beautiful night it was very difficult to leave the hotel in Namche. At 7:30 in the morning I already was packing, but I delayed the preparations and the breakfast as much as I could. I just couldn’t decide to leave. I ordered an imperial breakfast at about half past eight: two excellent fried eggs and four (!!) bread slices fried in milk and eggs. And a liter of hot chocolate! The entire spoiling I offered to myself in Namche costed me 46 dollars (dinner, shower, beer, breakfast and accommodation). A lot of money, but being at the end of the trek adventure I didn’t care. I deserved a little debauchery, right? :-)
I took some more photos, I went on the village streets and finally, with a wounded sigh, I packed my backpack on the shoulders and I started. I was expecting a crazy descent. So I fixed my kneepads very well - the best idea I had! -, I put the hat and the gloves, I opened the telescopes and I said "good bye" to the young Sherpa, beautiful woman. She has an impressive personality and charisma. The telescopes itself didn't help me actually. But the kneepads were the best accessories for such a long descending trail.
Awsome morning! Compared, the crystal does not exists in addition to this sky clarity and the painting itself does not exist in addition to the marred game of the various forms of the clouds which shaped, reformed, disappeared and appeared like royal crowns along the mountain peaks which guard the natural amphitheater of the village. A fairy tale morning indeed. It smelled of cold. It smelled like winter, although the sun at 8 a.m. it was pretty warm. Except the game of the dancing clouds, nothing was moving outside. The long heavy waterfall that fell hundreds of feet on the site of the mountain was petrified under the ice, it looked just like a white stripe, twisted on the dark and shadowy background of the over 6.000 m altitude high mountain. I tried for a moment to imagine what a spectacle offers that torrent of water during the summer, with its impressive length. It is for sure a majestic fall.
Mirosea a frig.

The shelter tepid from some beams and aluminum plates at the entrance to Namche, where as you arrive have to stop for checking out your trekking or climbing permit, was closed at that time in the morning. Too early for arrivals, for sure. I looked behind me for the last time. I hate these moments and I always cry. I followed then the wide and curved road thad descends through the forest. No sun for a while, but it wasn’t particular cold or myself I was better adapted to low temperatures. I walked slowly and very cautiously in order to protect my knees, which were already stressed by the weight of my backpack. If I probably lost about ten pounds during this trek, my backpack wasn’t much easier, maybe 3-4 pounds easier due to the toys and bonbons I gave out to the locals.

At a time I reached a wide segment of the trail, bouldery, offering a nice game of lights and shadows. The sun sneaked through the forest and offered some light color and warm to the dark cold corners. From the opposite side, climbing up to me, a small herd of delicate goats slowly came. They all had artistic muzzles made from basketry, a stronger straw. I’ve never seen before muzzled goats, as I hadn’t seen before mules with muzzle. The very simple explanation given by the locals: The animals always stop to pick something for eat, smell or drink. The muzzle doesn’t allow them to stop. Of course I dislike this, but ..... as I don’t have these people’s life, I cannot judge anything. I just have to accept the idea that the human being took the right of life and death over all other beings, plants or animals. Anyway, I didn’t see locals beating their animals (how you can see so often in Romania, for instant). This is not meaning that they never beat or torture their animals, but myself I never saw this. I saw an exhausted mule falling. And I saw an absolutely human and impressive scene, when a very tired, exhausted mule fell on the steeply descending trail and the mule behind him stopped and stood by him while looking to me and back to the fell animal and back to me again .....
Long trail today, endless. I counted six bridges which I had to cross. When you return on the same trail, you normally get the feeling of being shorter. But the distance between Namche and Lukla is real long, maybe 35 up to 40 km, I don’t know exactly. Crossing one of the long bridges I stopped for taking a picture of my own shadow and an American tourist was so nice to make a picture of me. Her Sherpa guide came to me to be in the same picture, this is the explanation of that :-)

I reached Phakding very late and normally I should overnight there. I had to stop for a short delayed lunch, I have had my breakfast 6 hours before. To get a Sherpa Stew took longer as expected, so I left Phakding after 4 p.m., very late. Still about 2 up to 3 and half hours to Lukla because of the backpack. If you have an easy stuff, you reach Lukla in two hours for sure. It was late because the dark is coming over this area at about 5 p.m. and the paths are empty, no locals are on the way. Everything is covered by cold and frozen air. And the worse was the fact that it is a very long ascent starting from Phakding.
It is senseless to describe the road again, it was the same as I came from Lukla three weeks ago. I started my march very serious beyond my limits actually. It was for the first time as I was faster ascending that the porters or locals I’ve met. I practically run for about two hours, I was so strongly confident in the chance to reach Lukla in maximum 2 and half hours. I’ve got slower as I wanted to make a longer movie and take some pictures. I slowed down as I saw a little boy, alone in the middle of the main path of the small village, playing in the ground with a stick. He was about 3 years old or even younger. Approaching him I took out from the backpack strap a small teddy bear I still had and I hid it in my palm. As I still had about 10 steps to the boy I gently opened my hand. The small child has set his eyes on the little toy, but still said nothing. He just stood down and wasn’t rushed to me as children usually do, pulling from everything they can, asking to give them something, anything. He seemed to me mesmerized. I put the other hand on his head, but I didn’t stop. I put then my hand with the teddy bear in his palm, I left the teddy bear there and I followed my way without looking behind. I feared to see him prostrating with gratitude. He just began to happily scream and call some names. I stopped and look behind after 100 meters and I tried to take some pictures of him. He still stood in the middle of the dark path of the village, with the teddy bear in his right hand pointed to me and looked from me to a wooden house down the road. Two people, a man and a woman carrying a baby came outside. They probably were his parents. Behind the small wooden house was a large field and other 4-5 older children  impetuosly rushed hearing the screaming little boy. He waved his hand with the teddy bear and pointed to me again and again. And I disappeared in the downward curve of the road. I will always recognize that village and the exact location, but I have no idea about the name of the place. And I think it was definitely before my late lunch. I am a little bit confused now about this.
With the last bit of energy of the batteries from my small camera I took a picture of an orange cloud which came out as a cigar smoke from the mountain behind me, Nupla. It was a fantastic, delirious image in that twilight. An orange cloud arose from a mount peak with an exceptional form. A gray mountain, a very precise shape, having on the top a snow covered plateau. I didn’t stay too long to watch and see what is happening with the form of that cloud. It was dark, cold, I was hungry and alone. I was still climbing and after almost three hours from Phakding I gave up to hope reaching Lukla. I lose control about the distance and time in a way. After the first two hours of running I dropped running. Losing control about time and distance is meaning something like every 10 minutes you think that you still have only a few minutes until your destination. But then you come out from a new curve and see in front of you a long path. Or a new curve and no end. The Chaunrikharka Village seemd to be indecently long. In a way I gave up the idea to reach Lukla. I knew that I am close, but I gave up to reach it.
I wanted to lie down and to sleep. Doesn't matter where. I am not even sure that I wanted to catch my plane next day. I could walk for another hour, no doubt. But I didn't want anymore, I cannot explain. I probably wanted to explore a different way....
I had some moments when I crossed my mind about Lukla being in a totally different direction. It seemed to be impossible. That evening it was a new confirmation that our physical skills are exclusively lead by our mind, what ever we do. Everything starts from inside.
From the moment I gave up the idea to reach Lukla, a fixed point, I felt free. O sad freedom. I don't know why. Only because I was caught by some limits of time. The mistake was my delayed start from Namche. I didn't want to leave Namche that day. But in the same time I limited my options through a ticket reservation. I had in mind two elements which blocked me. The reason of the entire situation. I had to be in Bucharest on 6th of January, because on 7th and 8th I had classes. On 5th of January my Nepalese visa expired too. I had to be in time for my flights connections. Any kind of delay involved formalities, time and money. And I had no money. I could find time, but not money. That was my limit.
So, I spent the night under the Himalaya sky. No food. No fire. Some water.

Phortse Thanga (3.675 m)-Namche Bazaar (3.440 m )
7 Stunden unterwegs

Halt!

16th day of trek, 28th of December 2010
Phortse Thanga (3.675 m)-Namche Bazaar (3.440 m )
7 hours

I started at 7:50 a.m., without any breakfast. It was much too cold. Not easy night, but a little bit more untroubled. I had to go outside only twice and to blow my stuffy nose about fifteen times. So, I could catch some sleep, it was nice.
But in the morning .... that coldness again. As I already said in other days, the morning coldness is bitter. I think I could write a book describing the coldness and everything it’s meaning. Himalaya coldness. Coldness of low, midle and high altitude. Night, morning, sunset and evening coldness. Cold on empty stomach. Fatique cold. Meal’s coldness. Cold through the bones. Coldness in the stove. Gompa’s cold. Coldness in the socks. Coldness under the tongue. Coldness in the ears of my teddy mouse. Coldness of the wind. Coldness inside the colon. Coldness from the icefalls. Coldness from the shadow and from the sun. Water’s and rock’s coldness. Coldness like an entity. Coldness like a being. Coldness of my camel bag and so on. Mind’s coldness. Stop!
Frigul stelelor. Frigul cetinei de brad. Frigul din colon. Frigul dinspre cascadele de gheață. Frigul din umbră și frigul din soare. Frigul apei. Frigul pietrei. Frigul ca entitate. Frigul ca stare. Frigul ca ființă. Frigul din furtunul camel bag-ului. Frigul părului din nas (cine are păr în nas). Frigul de pe unghii. Frigul care atârnă de cercei. Frigul gândurilor. Stop!
I climbed up very slowly. I was fatique, the coldness steels so much from your energy. Me and the 20 kg of my backpack walked on the narrow path, partly rough, advancing like a needle does when you knot every single eye in a very long scarf. On the right side I had the mountain, alternation of cold rock and dry vegetation. On the left it was the gap, down away, the turqoise river.
On the other side, after about an hour away of walking, a superb view of a cold AmaDablam was opening, like waiting for the sunrise. There was a plot of straight land, inexplicably hanging from the mountain side. On that palm of ground, in shadow and coldness, it was a human settlement with a few dozen of households. It was like a island in a lost and forgotten world. No light. It was half past eight in the morning and I was walking for 50 minutes now, cold shivering.
I had only a single wish: to see the sun coming out. When the sun is high enough for loosing itself the the granite walls which block the expression of the rays, the change of an entire universe occurs in just a few seconds. It is a downright delusional process, amazing, beneficial. The sun gives birth, the sun gives life to everything that means these lands. From the moment it abounds over what you see, the shadow becomes warm and pleasant, within five to fifteen minutes you start to get out of clothes, you breathe different, the gloves are gone, everything looks more beautiful, more hospitable, the emotions are more positive. You feel reborning. I remember the sunrise on Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Kilimanjaro. And on the way to Thorung La, here, in Himalaya, around Annapurna. Each sunrise is a very different experience.
I watched after this sunrise as a hungry cheetah looking after its next feed. When I saw the Big Moment approaching, I stopped walking and I began to count, setting my camera ready, so I caught a second before, the moment of the sunrise and the seconds after it. Divine. That human settlement on the other side of the other mountain suddenly became – at least in my imagination – an universe full of life, even if the villagers probably still slept at hat hour, I don’t know. It was too far away and I couldn’t see any movement.
I kept walking for another hour. I didn’t meet anybody. When the path became larger, I already felt much higher from the starting point and I was 300 m higher, walking for about two hours. I reached Mong La Pass at 3.973 m at 9:30 a.m. and I stopped for a relaxed, sunny breakfast.

There are about 4-5 lodges in Mong. I passed the apparent ancient stupa, from its top streched many rows of colored flags printed with the budist prayers, climbing to the right on the terrace of the highest location. I longed from sun and large open space, I enjoyed being the only tourist there at that early hour in the morning. Even for the local people, the owner of those lodges, it was a little bit early, as they knew they have no tourists there. The Snowland View Lodge had the door open, but the Sherpa woman probably still had a nap in her kitchen as I entered and said ”Namaste, good morning...?”.
From the first moment I saw the very small settlement I regreted not to come here last evening and stay here over night. But these situations are pretty often in the Himalayas and, as you are not sure about what is next on the trail, it is better to stop in a place where you feel secure before the dark is covering everything.
Looking from that high to AmaDablam over the colored stupa and over the whole panorama I enjoyed my simple breakfast in fully relaxation. A long trail waited there for me, a dusty and very narrow path winding dissapearing on the copper right side of the mountain after its hump.
I stayed one hour in Mong and I hardly wanted to leav the place. I can’t explain why or how I felt an impulse to go forward, but it was a right decision after all. I had no deadline actually, but I felt I had to take the plane to Kathmandu no later than 30th of December. I had to leave Nepal already on 5th, so the time was, because of the distance between Lukla and Kathamdu, pretty tide. And because of all unexpected risks about having all the flights canceled. Much later – in February - I actually find out that on 30th of December the snow covered Namche Bazaar and the flights were canceled. To trek from Lukla to Kathmandu can take about 6 up to 8 days.
The trail from Mong to Namche Bazaar took me four hours. It was an amazing, a wonderful trail, ups and downs, half of the way very narrow and steep. Before entering Khumjung – Paradise likely, really!! – it was a very steep paved segment of the route, fitted with metal bar on the left, something very rare on the Himalayan paths. I descended with a lot of caution and from the opposite direction came a large group of Japanese trekkers, all of them without backpacks. They asked me if I am alone on the trail and when I said “yes”, all of them exclaimed in a kind of admiration which I found it pretty funny in that moment: “ oooooooooooooh, nooooooo! It can’t be! Really?!”. I laughed and they were convinced about it, as nobody came behind me.
It can’t be! Really?!?!”
I walked very slow on that segment and I filmed in the same time, it was much to great to miss it and being close to the end of my adventure I knew exactly how many available batteries I still had. I did the longest film today, 12 minutes.
As Kongde Ri Mountain (6.187 m)* appeared far away in front of me, white and majestic, I knew I close Namche Bazaar (this is meaning still 2 up to 3 hours walking, of course). The mountain is located four km west of the amphiteathre of Namche and is classified as a trekking peak, but it is considered one of the most difficult to climb. To climb it a climbing permitt for 350 USD is necessary to be applied.
*”A stunning new Khumbu trek and climb combination - A fresh perspective on Nepal's most popular region - Fabulous views of Everest - Trek to the "forbidden" Nangpa La on the Tibetan Border. Towering above Namche Bazaar, the triple summited Kwangde Ri is a strikingly impressive mountain. This is one of the difficult climb trekking peak. Its northern summit, Kwangde Nup (19795ft.), which is climbed from a base camp in the rarely visited Lumding Valley, makes a superb trekking peak objective and also provides a simply fantastic vantage point. The summit panorama extends across the Khumbu, from Ama Dablam and Makalu in the East, to Everest and Cho Oyu and includes the spectacular Rolwaling peaks, to the northwest.
Just as exciting as the peak, however, is our chosen means of acclimatization, which will involve a week of trekking in the lovely valley to the north of Thame and culminate in an ascent to the high and glaciated Nangpa La (18750ft.). This remote pass is the high point of a historically important trade route between Nepal and Tibet and has, until recently, been off-limits to trekking groups. This mouth-watering new itinerary provides a whole new way of looking at the Khumbu. Kwangde Ri is also called Kongde Ri and Kwande on various maps. This difficult mountain forms an impressive multi-summited ridge on the eastern end of the Lumding Himal, which in turn can be regarded as part of the Rolwaling Himal. Rising south-west of Namche Bazaar above the Bhote Kosi River, the mountain's northern flank forms an impressive barrier that throws down several steep ridges to the north. It's glaciated southern flank is more aloof.
It is hidden at the northern end of the Lumding Drangka, a high and remote valley bounded to the west by the tumbling glaciers of Karyolung (6,511m), Khartang (6,853m) and Numbur (6,959m). The Lumdring valley is rarely visited by trekkers or expeditions. At the northern end of the valley the stream cascades down a natural rocky barrier above which is a moraine-bound lake, the Tsho Og, at the snout of the Limding Glacier. North of the Tsho Og, itself hidden in a huge rocky cwm, is the massive Lumding Tsho Teng (5,151m).All of the routes climbed to date on the Kwangde Peaks are difficult; none have proved suitable for commercial trekking peak expeditions. The routes on the North Face are particularly difficult and reflect recent developments in lightweight Himalayan climbing, with an emphasis on technical difficulty and a high degree of commitment. Two climbers without support camps or fixed ropes have invariably made them, although in at least one case a subsequent ascent has seen a return to traditional siege style tactics with masses of fixed rope and camps. Even the routes on the South Face are committing and difficult, although the climbing is more traditional in character. Experienced climbers who are looking for rarely climbed and challenging small peak in the Himalayas will find this peak very attractive.” Source: http://www.nepal-guide.com/kwangde_ri_peak.htm

Behind me the AmaDablam’s profile was more beautiful as ever and today I had to say “good bye” to it. A group of Sherpa women sat at charades loosely scattered on the rocky sunny road. I met the Khumjung Village from a different perspective, crossing it from one end to another along the main road that connects the path coming from Namche Bazaar to the point where the trail splits in two different directions: Gokyo and Everest B.C.
Khumjung is a large village with an unitary houses structure: same format, same colors and same materials. Both of them, Khumjung and Khunde give an impression of gentle prosperity and community, they transmit something different. I could imagine myself living there a a longer time. Predominant feature is a gray dry stone, light gray, dusty, but beautiful. Going uphill on a heavenly path, flooded by sunlight and heat, you see a terraced land left behind the habitual stone fence. There are dozens of Sherpa men working. They chop by hand rocks and stones turning them into gravel. A Sisyphus work. This is how they live their lives. I do not know if this is a particular job or if everybody is doing this when want to build a house. I just know that it impresses me every time.

I walked along stroking the stone plates arranged on the mani wall placed right in the middle of the road, on the left, as required by local superstition. I admired again Khumbila, the holy mountain, on the right. That mountain stands there like a hen who takes care of her kittens, the houses and the people inside them. I reached the most important place of the village (at least I think so), a large ground, nearly as much as a stadium, with two large stupa, white, from where starts on a wide road, a very long mani wall covered with the same stone slabs, carved with mantras or religious figures. The long mani wall stops in an ancient stupa, which certainly has seen a lot of events along the time, including the building process of the school complex of Sir Hillary.
Hillary's School occupies a large area, has a series of stone buildings with a single level, in front of them there is a bronze bust of the New Zealand climber. It is surrounded by a high fence, the gate was locked (vacation time), so I couldn’t enter. And there is a very large playground even alongside the road that leads to the very wide stairs made from rusty stones. That is the new road to Namche, the oldest being a little bit longer narrow wild path.
I ostentatiously delayed my walk through the sunny quiet village, so it took me a whole hour to start getting out of it. I had somehow no choice than being sad, but going further on my trail. I continued to put one foot before the other, successively, in the same way we ensure our movement. The way to the hills up there out of Khumjung was simply charming and after I passed along another ancient stupa located on the empty hills I wanted more than before to reach the end of the trek day, to stop, to wash myself, to eat something, to write down my notes and to rest in the pure sense of the word.

I arrived in Namche Bazaar after 2:30 p.m., very early. I was on the road for almost seven hours. The first concern was to stop at the Yeti Airlines to book a flight seat for after tomorrow. Occasion on which I learned that the dealer can’t make reservations there, but only ticket sales! Howit  comes? When you sell a plane ticket you also need to sell the seat.  There are no standing places on the plane, right? Even in Nepal not. Bookings can be made only from Lukla or Kathmandu. I was lucky to get Kedar who could make the reservation directly from Kathmandu, so I had my return assured now (of course, in the limit of local situations, as flights can be canceled anytime and without any information).
Having this done, I entered into the first hotel I saw, just across the road. A large, high hotel, apparently expensive, but asking costs nothing. I was surprised to get a room for only 100 rupees in a much, much better conditions as I had in the Khumbu Lodge (see the comments on 2nd day of the trek). The hotel was almost empty, only 3-4 tourists. Excellent 2-beds-room, sunny, warm, clean, excellent view. For 300 rupees I could have a hot shower for 10 minutes. What do you need more?! I just wanted to have a clean, quiet corner for myself, to drink a bier when possible, a hot chocolate when possible, to have a hot soup and to enjoy the heat of the sun. And I had all of these and I felt happy. I would have wished to stay a night longer in that location, but next day I had to move further and to reach Lukla. Still a very long way for at least 6 hours.
